Earth Day is occurring annually on April 22nd and globally emphasizes the significance of environmental conservation as a reminder of the importance of sustainability.
The theme this year, ‘Planet vs. Plastics’, serves to raise awareness about the detrimental effects of plastic pollution. However, a recent report from the consultancy and research firm EA Earth Action, titled Plastic Overshoot Day, reveals that a shocking 220 million tonnes of plastic waste are set to be generated 2024.
The report unveils that over 1/3 of the waste will be mismanaged at the end of its lifecycle, resulting in 68.6 million tonnes of plastic waste to the natural environment. On average, each person globally is expected to produce 28 kilograms of that.
Data indicates that there has been a steady rise in plastic waste(7.11%) since 2021 and continues to grow with 50% of world’s population(as of April 2024)in regions where the volume of plastic waste has already exceeded the capacity for effective management. By September 5th, 2024, on which the Global Plastic Overshoot Day lands, this alarming statistic will increase to 66%.
Rather than working against nature, we are already provided with viable solutions on a large scale, according to Sian Sutherland, the Co-Founder of A Plastic Planet & Plastic Health Council.
